CORALVILLE (KWWL) - A North Liberty man said he had been planning on shooting and killing a 20-year-old woman inside a  mall, according to a criminal complaint.

Online court documents said 22-year-old Alexander Matthew Kozak left the Coral Ridge Mall on Friday, took a gun from his home and returned to the mall later that night with the intention of killing the woman.

He shot the victim in the back three times and ran.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Her name has not been released.

Online court documents also said that even after Miranda warnings, Kozak told police he intentionally killed the woman and that it was premeditated.

He has been charged with first-degree murder which is a felony.

PREVIOUS STORY:

A 22-year-old former mall security guard shot a 20-year-old woman multiple times at a Coralville mall before fleeing east, finally being apprehended hours later.

Alexander Matthew Kozak, 22, of North Liberty was arrested Friday night and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of the unnamed woman, according to the Coralville Police Department.

Kozak's Facebook page shows he was a mall security guard at Coral Ridge Mall.

Police say Kozak shot the woman multiple times at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville at around 7:30 p.m. Friday. She was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she died of her wounds.

Kozak's vehicle was stopped by the Iowa State Patrol as he was traveling east on Interstate 80 near Davenport, according to police. Police say he was taken into custody without incident.

Police say he was the only gunman, and the woman was the only victim.

PREVIOUS STORY:

One man is in custody in connection with Friday night's shooting inside the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, in which a woman was reportedly shot in the back and killed.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says the suspected shooter has been apprehended and there is no further danger to the general public.

The IDPS did not release the man's name.

The Iowa City Press Citizen reports a woman was shot in the back by a former mall security guard, who had been fired earlier Friday.

No names have been made public.

Coralville Police say the mall was locked down Friday night following the shooting.

KWWL's Justin Andrews is on the scene, and says authorities were telling everyone inside the mall to leave, and no one was allowed to enter. Traffic was being diverted around the area.

One witness told KWWL she was in Scheels and heard multiple shots. Employees there ushered customers into a back room, the witness said.

An Olive Garden employee told KWWL all businesses in and around Coral Ridge Mall were told by police to shut down.

Multiple ambulances were on the scene.

KWWL's Amie Steffeneicher and Caitlin Harbach contributed to this report.
