Officer-involved shooting in Louisa County

LOUISA COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is reviewing an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night.

The Department of Public Safety says deputies from Louisa County tried to pull over 55-year-old Richard Spurling of Muscatine around 11:40 p.m., but Spurling tried to make a getaway.

Deputies approached Spurling's Cadillac Seville when the vehicle stopped.  That's when authorities say Spurling drove his vehicle towards a deputy.  The deputy fired his gun at the car, and hit Spurling in the chest.

No deputies were hurt, and Spurling is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Spurling is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, eluding, driving while revoked, possession of drug paraphernalia, and five misdemeanor traffic offenses.

The names of the Louisa County deputies are being withheld until they can be interviewed.
