Iowan accused of using woman's crutch to hit her

Posted: Updated:
A Mason City man who police say hit a woman with one of her crutches has been charged with a felony.

The Mason City Globe Gazette says 34-year-old Derrell Tate is charged with willful injury. Online court records don't list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on Tate's behalf.

Police say Tate got into a fight with two women around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. One of the women was on crutches because of a leg injury, and police say Tate took one from her and struck her with it.

She and Tate were treated at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and released. The other woman declined medical treatment.

The women's names haven't been released. Police say Tate had been in a relationship with one of them.
