Prohm ready to get started at ISU

AMES (KWWL) -  Tuesday morning, Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard officially introduced Steve Prohm as the 20th head coach in Iowa State history, and the new guy is ready to get started.

"They say there's no better place to play in the country than in Hilton,” said Prohm, “and I can't wait for that first home game. I love watching it on TV, Big Monday, there's nothing better."

Prohm takes over an Iowa State team coming off a pair of Big 12 championships that averaged just under 79 points a game which ranked13th best in the country.

Last year, his own Murray State team was the 10th highest scoring team in the country, and he plans on keeping the Cyclones' up-tempo tradition.

"I've watched Coach Hoiberg's tapes to learn and see different things, and you hear them all the time yelling 'spacing, spacing, spacing, spacing,'” said the new ISU head man, “and you'll hear the same thing: spacing, deepest part of the corner you can be in."

"We're going to play just as fast as Fred did and just try to get better defensively,” added point guard Monte Morris, “and I feel like that was our missing piece."

Before figuring out a coaching staff and worrying about recruiting, Prohm says his number one priority this week is connecting with his new team, a group he met for the first time on Monday night. The players say that meeting put a lot of minds at ease.

"I think just the way he holds himself and the respect that he shows for us is making it easy for us,” said forward Georges Niang.

"I just want these guys to believe in me,” added Prohm, “because I'm going to believe in them, build a great relationship, and just go from there."
