Black bear spotted near Jesup, Gilbertville

Posted: Updated:
JESUP (KWWL) - Some people in Jesup say they've spotted a black bear in their backyard.

The attached photo shows the bear on Ron and Becky Wilberding's property.

Becky said she was taking while taking the photos.

Jim Jansen with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said it's his best guess at this point the bear is the same bear spotted in Dubuque.

"When you think of an animal that can move 20 miles in a day if it has to, it makes it probable," he said.

Jansen said it's a good bet the bear came from Minnesota or Wisconsin, just hasn't been spotted along his entire journey.

"Just because we don't see it doesn't mean it's not there," he said.

The bear is a young male, and Jansen believes it won't stay around the area very long.

The last reported sighting was in Gilbertville.
