Phone scam targeting MidAmerican Energy customers reported across Iowa

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says scam phone calls to MidAmerican Energy customers have now spread throughout the state.

Since late May, MidAmerican has documented a significant increase in calls from customers reporting scam attempts in the Des Moines, Council Bluffs, Fort Dodge, Iowa City, and Davenport areas.

MidAmerican anticipates customers in additional Iowa cities are being targeted but not reported.

Scammers have been successful in getting personal information or money from some Iowans.

The Department of Public Safety says an estimated 4 to 5 percent of customers were fooled by the caller.

The scammers have also targeted businesses, including Mama Nick's and Pawsitive Pet Care in Waterloo.

Scammers use sophisticated devices to make it appear the phone call is actually coming from MidAmerican Energy.

The scammers insist on direct payment on the phone via a credit card or they direct the customer to callback a specific number and pay with a pre-paid card.

The real MidAmerican Energy does not threaten immediate disconnection or demand payment over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious phone call, hang up immediately and call 1-888-427-5632.
