CORALVILLE (KWWL) -

A man who triggered an AMBER Alert in March claims what he did was justified.

Online court documents say 48-year-old Kenneth Johns plans to "rely on a defense of justification" for the charges of second-degree kidnapping.

He's accused abducting his 10-year-old step-daughter, Brianna Crane and threatening to kill his wife. Crane was placed in the care of the Department of Human Services.

Johns was also involved in a jail fight with another inmate in March. Authorities say Johns was the primary aggressor, biting the inmate on the leg.

No trial date has been set for Johns yet.

The girl's mother, 44-year-old Shelly Johns, in April pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges. Criminal complaints say Shelly Johns burned her daughter's face with a cigarette, smacked her, kicked her and pulled her hair. Police also say Shelly Johns kept drugs inside the house where she lived with the girl and used them in her presence.
