HIAWATHA (KWWL) - A Hiawatha man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to cook meth, leading to a fire in 2013.

The November 2013 fire damaged multiple homes in a mobile home court in Hiawatha.

Michael Lala pleaded guilty in January to attempting to manufacture methamphetamine.

In a plea agreement, Lala admitted to making meth multiple times between April 2012 and May 2014. He also admitted to cooking meth via the "one-pot" method on November 13, 2013. The bottle he was using tipped over and started a fire. The mobile home he was in was destroyed and five nearby homes were heavily damaged. One of those belonged to a family with four children.

In addition to his prison sentence, Lala must serve a 3-year term of supervised release after he gets out of prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
