New technology to be used to report Iowa caucus results

DES MOINES (AP) -

Leaders of the Iowa Democratic and Republican parties are working together to improve the reporting and security of the voting results from the Iowa caucuses.

Republican Party Chairman Jeff Kaufmann and Democratic Party Chairwoman Andy McGuire said Friday they're working with Microsoft Corp. to develop a new system that compiles results directly from precincts into a secure computer system. Each party will have its own software to deliver results to the public via mobile applications.

They say the new system will be accurate, reliable and fast and will assure confidence in the caucuses so the state maintains its first-in-the nation status in the presidential selection process.

In the 2012 Republican Party caucuses Mitt Romney was named winner but the party later said former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum actually won.
