Office for Civil Rights investigating gender discrimination complaint at U. of Iowa

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - The University of Iowa  is the center of a gender discrimination investigation.

The U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is investigating a complaint filed by four former or current members of the women's field hockey team.

The complaint alleges the University discriminated against four female students when it failed to investigate a complaint of sex discrimination against Athletic Director Gary Barta.

The complaint against Barta was filed in October after Tracy Griesbaum was fired from her job as the women's field hockey coach. She was fired in August.

According to the University, Barta removed Griesbaum due to several complaints of harassment and mistreatment from athletes on the team over the course of several years.

The OCR's letter to the university states that "opening the allegations for investigation in no way implies that OCR has made a determination with regard to their merit."

The University says it will cooperate fully throughout the investigation.
