MidAmerican Energy customers are being targeted by scammers in the Des Moines area, and the company is concerned the scam might spread to other parts of Iowa.
In the last few days, more than 60 businesses in the Des Moines area reported receiving a scam call. The scammer claimed to be MidAmerican Energy and threatened to disconnect services. According to reports, the thief insisted on payment immediately by calling a fake phone response system or by paying with a credit card or a pre-paid card.
MidAmerican Energy wants to point out a few red flags to warn you of such a scam. The energy company says disconnecting services is a last resort, not the first step in the process. Also MidAmerican Energy accepts several different forms of payment. In addition, MidAmerican Energy does not ask for personal information over the phone.
Customers getting such a call are asked to hang up on scammers and call 1-888-427-5632.
