AMES (KWWL) -

The Chicago Bulls will make what is being billed as a "major announcement" at 2 p.m. Tuesday -- and KWWL will bring it to you live from Chicago on KWWL.com.

That means "The Mayor" has decided not to seek re-election. It's an offer he just couldn't refuse.

In his first public comments to the media in weeks, Iowa State basketball coach Fred Hoiberg spoke to reporters, just before boarding a plane to Chicago Monday afternoon.

For some time now, Fred "The Mayor" Hoiberg has been widely reported as the next head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Several reports say the Bulls have offered Hoiberg a 5-year, $25-million contract.

He told reporters dealing with all the speculation while also remaining silent on the change has been a challenge.

"It's been extremely tough," he said. "First of all, I want to apologize to everybody for the way its gone down. Everything that's been reported out there and all the rumors and speculation that's been going around. It's been very difficult to deal with that because I have not been able to comment on anything because there is nothing firm out there.

"And I'm not the kind of guy who's gonna lie that I didn't have interest," he added. "I'm not the kind of person to say there's something done because there wasn't."

ESPN Sportscenter reports Monday afternoon that "Fred Hoiberg has informed several Iowa State staff members and players he is gone to Bulls."  A formal announcement from the Bulls will come at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
