Decorah police cut deer out of tangled soccer net

DECORAH (KWWL) -

Chalk it up as an assist for the Decorah Police Department.

Officers Sara Hendrickson, Brent Parker and Jim Frost all helped save the life of a deer that had gotten stuck in a soccer net.

The call came in a little after 7 a.m. May 18. Hendrickson had just gotten to the office for the day.

"I thought, 'Well, I'm gonna grab a scissors.' I don't know why I thought that, but at the time, I did, and I'm glad I had it," she said.

They came in handy.

When the officers arrived on the scene, they were confronted with a scared deer that had wrapped its neck multiple times in a soccer net.

Parker basically laid on top of the deer to hold it down while Hendrickson did the cutting.

"It's definitely unusual," she said.

They were able to cut the deer clear, and get out of the way in time as the deer bounded away from the scene shaken up, but probably none the worse for wear.

It's not a situation these officers see often, but their chief said they handled it well.

“I think they handled it perfectly," said Bill Nixon, Decorah's Police Chief. "They were creative, and kind of thinking on their feet, and that's kind of part of the job.”

Nixon also said it's not the first time they've had an unusual call dealing with a deer. He said one got into the high school earlier this year.
