WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank says it raised more than $34,000 and 33,000 pounds of food through community events this spring.

$12,000 came from Combat Hunger during the last weekend in March.  Grocery shoppers can add $1 or $3 to their grocery bill.

Letter carriers also picked up food and donations during the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which is always the Saturday before Mother's Day. More than 33,500 pounds of food and more than $250 were delivered to the food bank.

Another annual event called Empty Bowls brought in $22,000.  The event got a little extra boost from a visit from Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi," Larry Thomas.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank provides nutritious food and grocery products, to about 200 nonprofit organizations and programs who assist the hungry, and to individuals who need food assistance to sustain life. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 6 million pounds of food within a 16-county service area.
