IOWA CITY (KWWL) - The University of Iowa will celebrate a milestone in 2008 flood recovery efforts later this week.

For the first time since it was immersed in water seven years ago, the ground floor of the Iowa Memorial Union will be open to the public.

University and local officials will commemorate the re-opening of the 83,000-square-foot space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception Wednesday morning.  The project cost $21.6 million and restores the ground floor of the IMU to the same function and design as June 2008.

There are only three major construction projects associated with flood recovery left to complete: the replacement of the Art Building, Voxman Music Building, and Hancher Auditorium, which are all set to open in 2016.
