WATERLOO (KWWL) - It's been a year since a Vietnam veteran was beaten and left for dead near a Waterloo School.

Dennis Washburn was found Memorial Day weekend 2014.

"I miss him a lot," said April Washburn, Dennis's daughter. "You know, some times are always worse than others."

On Sunday, family and friends came together to clean up the park where he was found.

"We need to make it a safe place for kids to play," said Washburn.

This isn't the first time April Washburn has been to this park.

She says she was there a couple of days after her dad was found to try and piece together what may have happened the night he was beaten.

"(The) more time that passes, the harder it's going to be to find out -- but I mean, we've pretty much been told from close to that time that if somebody never came forward, they probably weren't going to be able to figure it out anyway," said April Washburn.

As for now, she's trying to make this park a better place along with a few friends, but still hopes whoever did this will come forward.

"I hope that the guilt eats them up," said Washburn.

Police say they are still investigating the case. There is a $1,000 Crimstoppers reward for anyone with information.
