LA PORTE CITY (KWWL) -

Aaliyah and Alivia are two little girls celebrating their last day of first grade.

Just three years prior, you wouldn't catch either of these girls running around at the park.

Both girls have physical and mental disabilities, and Alivia wasn't able to walk without assistance until recently.

And that's part of what makes what happened at Union Middle School so special.

"We stood there with tears streaming down our face," said the girls teacher, Sheryl Petersen.

As she packs up a now empty classroom,, she recounts how it all unfolded--at the lunch table, with a group of boys.

"They're very competitive young men, rough and tumble" said Petersen.

She says one of the boys turned to Alivia and told her they were going to teach her how to play kickball.

Alivia had never played kickball before, so the boys helped her through the whole game.

"And all the boys said don't get her out, don't get her out!" said Petersen.

They even lead her to a home run.

"All the children ran up to her and cheered, and it was better than winning a gold medal in the Olympics," said Petersen.

"When we heard, what did mommy do? She cried," said Alivia's mom April.

As a parent of special needs daughters, Alivia's mom says  sometimes she worries about bullying -- but that never was the case with Alivia's class.

A great school, and a new favorite sport for Alivia.
