Officials with Iowa City are warning residents that has the spring rainy season arrives, it's important to be careful around stormwater.

They warn that storm runoff can often become contaminated with anything from motor oil and heavy metals to pesticides and trash. They offer the below tips.

When dealing with stormwater, consider your safety and that of your family:

Don't play in it. Not only can it contain harmful chemicals or trash that can cause injury, it can move swiftly enough to knock people down.

Some storm drains don't have cover grates. Small children or pets can be pulled into the narrow openings and hurt by the fall or even swept away.

Keep storm drains on your street clear of debris to help prevent street-flooding.

Stay away from streams, detention ponds, and the river during rain events. They can quickly and unpredictably rise, as large volumes of stormwater rush in from storm drains.

Residents are encouraged to call the Storm Sewer Hot Line at 319-356-5177 to report backed-up storm drains, improper discharge of pollutants or hazardous waste into storm drains, or other stormwater-related matters. The phone is available 24 hours a day.
