DUBUQUE (KWWL) - The Loras College Athletic Department is mourning the loss of former Duhawk football player, Kyle Kirchhoff.

According to the college's website, Kirchhoff, 24, of Hanover Park, Ill., died Friday.

Chicago Police tell KWWL an active death investigation is underway after a 24-year-old male died from injuries Friday night around 10:30 p.m. at a music venue in the 1100 block of W. Lawrence in Chicago.

The Cook County, Illinois Medical Examiner's Office confirms to KWWL that Kirchhoff is the man who died in that incident.

Police tell KWWL the victim fell on two pieces of metal, suffered puncture wounds in his chest, and later died at an area hospital.

In a statement issued by Loras College, Head Football Coach Steve Helminiak said, "Kyle was loved by his teammates and coaches alike, his impact on and off the field will be missed but not forgotten."

Kirchhoff was a defensive lineman for the Duhawks. According to Loras College, Kirchhoff was entering his second season as the Defensive Line Coach at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
