DES MOINES (KWWL) -

There will be no live bird exhibits at county fairs across Iowa this summer, as well as the Iowa State Fair.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture made the announcement today, beginning immediately and effective through the end of 2015 due to avian influenza.

The order also prohibits live birds from being sold at livestock auctions, swap meets and exotic sales.

In a statement, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said, "The scale of this outbreak has been unprecedented, so we think it is important we take every possible step to limit the chance that this disease will spread any further.
