Omaha officer and Council Bluffs resident killed on duty

Omaha's police chief says an officer and Iowa resident shot while helping serve an arrest warrant has died, a day before her maternity leave was about to begin.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday that 29-year-old Officer Kerrie Orozco, who lived in Council Bluffs, died at Creighton University Medical Center shortly after the 1 p.m. shooting.

Schmaderer said the suspect, 26-year-old Marcus Wheeler, also died at the hospital.

The gunfire erupted while officers were trying to serve a felony arrest warrant on Wheeler. He was wanted on a warrant accusing him of a previous shooting in Omaha.

Paramedics performed CPR on both the officer and the suspect as they were taken to the hospital. Schmaderer says Orozco was a seven-year veteran of the department and worked in the gang unit.

She gave birth to a baby girl in February. The baby was delivered early and was expected to come home Thursday, the same day Orozco was supposed to begin her maternity leave.

Now, Orozco is remembered for her community service, and her final sacrifice.

Gov. Terry Branstad released the following statement after Officer Orozco's death:

"I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Kerrie Orozco," he said in a statement. "As a former military policeman, I am keenly aware of the dangers law enforcement face every single day on the job. Officer Orozco served with integrity and was a model peace officer. My thoughts and prayers are with her newborn daughter and her entire family."

Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds also released a statement Thursday:

"Officer Kerrie Orozco went to work every day to serve her community and keep her neighbors safe," she said. "This is a devastating loss of a dedicated public servant, community member and new mother. I offer my deepest sympathy to the family of Officer Orozco."
