Maryland drops parallel parking on driving test

Posted: Updated:
(AP) GLEN BURNIE, Md. — New drivers in Maryland will not have to worry about parallel parking as a requirement to pass a driving test.

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration officially removed the requirement Tuesday. Spokesman Buel Young says officials determined the maneuvers required to parallel park were already being evaluated in other portions of the test, such as backing, steering, speed control, use of mirrors and judgment of space.

Officials say despite a failure to test the skill set for several years, parallel parking has not been permanently removed from the D.C. test.

Young says parallel parking will continue to be a teaching requirement in state-controlled driver's education courses in Maryland.
