11 people taken to hospital after ammonia leak at bird flu farm

LYON COUNTY (KWWL) -

An unexpected threat because of the bird flu: 11 people are sent to the hospital at a chicken farm in northwest Iowa, but not because of the virus.

Workers at a farm near George were getting ready to euthanize chickens that had bird flu. When they moved a pile of manure, it released a cloud of ammonia. 11 workers then became sick. They had a hard time breathing. Other symptoms included headaches and blurred vision.

Also in the state, two new cases of bird flu have been confirmed -- one in Sac County and the other in Calhoun County.

That makes 62 cases now in Iowa.
