Kernels 1-hit Peoria to snap a three game losing streak

Posted: Updated:
The Kernels held Peoria to one hit in an 8-0 pounding of the Chiefs on Wednesday night. Stephen Gonsalves led the way by striking out seven over six innings, allowing the only hit in the first inning. Cedar Rapids collected 12 hits to outhit the Chiefs 12-1. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak.

Gonsalves (4-1) was terrific on the hill for the victory by going six scoreless innings. It was his second start where the southpaw allowed only one hit in at least six innings pitched. He also issued just one hit to the Timber Rattlers at Wisconsin on April 23 over seven innings.  Against Peoria on Wednesday, Gonsalves struck out seven and walked three while hitting one batter. Collin Radack singled in the first inning for Peoria's only hit of the night.

Michael Cederoth made his first relief appearance for the Kernels and went two perfect innings, striking out three. Zack Tillery struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to close out the win.

The one-hitter came two nights after Peoria's Austin Gomber allowed a single hit to the Kernels in a seven-inning shutout on Monday. Wednesday's victory prevented a season-worst four-game losing streak.

Brett Doe recorded his first three-hit game for Cedar Rapids as the catcher went 3-for-5 with one run batted in. Zack Larson and Blake Schmit both collected two hits and two runs batted in. Trey Vavra and Pat Kelly also had two hits each.
