WATERLOO (KWWL) - We hear it all the time: don't text and drive.

One area family fell victim, as a driver lost control of his car due to texting and driving. On Mother's Day, Robert Anderson of Waterloo crashed his car into a family's front yard at the corner of W. 11th St. and Forest St, crashing into a tree.

"I continued raking and picking up sticks and all of a sudden I hear a loud bang."

Chantel Bradford was outside in the yard at the time of the crash, raking leaves.

"I froze, my body went into shock basically."

Bradford's mother was inside at the time, vacuuming in the living room.

"I came around the corner to my grandson, crying and shaking, everyone was crying actually. My grandson said that car almost killed him," Tami Diaz said.

Her grandson, seven-year-old Jesse Diaz, was playing in the yard when the car came flying through the fence.

"The part that really broke my heart was when my nephew said he almost died that day but he ran really fast. He ran fast like a cheetah were his exact words," Bradford said.

According to the police report, the driver was arguing with his girlfriend and texting. Diaz said neighbors' homes shook from the impact of the crash, and many came running to make sure everyone was alright.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the family. Police say Anderson was taken to Allen Hospital after the crash with minor injuries. He was given a citation of failure to maintain control.

KWWL reached out to Anderson Wednesday, but has not yet heard back.
