WATERLOO (KWWL) - After all that's happened lately, students in the Waterloo school district are urging the community to stop the violence -- all through their art.

This project is district-wide. It's an opportunity for these students to express their concerns while trying to make a difference in the community.

The students at Lincoln Elementary are decorating peace doves and peace signs. Some of them will be hung up outside the school for people to see them all summer long, while others will be distributed around the community.

The project was brought up by art teacher at Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence.

They then took the idea to the city council this week.

Teachers say they are surprised at what some of these students are creating.

"I think sometimes we take for granted how much that they're absorbing through the media and just in their neighborhoods and things," said Sarah Gorsuch, Lincoln Elementary art teacher. "It's nice to see fifth graders kind of blossom into mature thinkers that they are."

Gorsuch says she hopes the students learn to take ownership of their actions and persuade other to be aware of their actions, too.

The hope for the art project is to pass out the doves and peace sign pictures to different people in the community and for them to be hung up.
