WATERLOO (KWWL) - The maker of Snack Pack and Swiss Miss snack foods announced a multimillion-dollar expansion, new production line and 55 new jobs in the Cedar Valley.

ConAgra Foods will expand its operations in the MidPort Industrial Park in Waterloo to the tune of $50 million in order to produce David seeds, the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber announced at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The expansion is contingent upon state and local assistance.

"The City of Waterloo is proud to continue our growing relationship with ConAgra Foods," said Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark in a release. "This expansion is great for Waterloo's tax base and it adds new employment opportunities for the whole Cedar Valley area."

The proposed expansion will add production of David sunflower seeds to ConAgra's existing production line of snack foods. It will include new construction of processing, packaging, warehouse and administrative areas.

The entire project is expected to increase plant production by 30 percent -- adding 99,000 square feet to the existing facility.

"Waterloo is a great fit for ConAgra Foods and our new snack seeds facility," said Mike Tracy, senior vice president of supply chain for ConAgra, in a release. "Waterloo has an excellent workforce and the location will allow us to meet our current and future business needs."

ConAgra originally set up shop in Waterloo to produce the pudding packs in 1997. This would be ConAgra's third expansion since that time.

Hawkeye Community College also announced they will help train the expected new workers through a state training incentive.

ConAgra is looking for state incentives, which are on the Iowa Economic Development Authority's agenda for their May 22 meeting, as well as local incentives, which are on the Waterloo City Council's agenda for May 26.
