CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

An Illinois man is headed to federal prison for 10 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm in Dubuque.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 24-year-old Blake Maurer of Freeport, Illinois was sentenced on Thursday to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.

Court documents show Maurer admitted in February to possessing a gun and ammunition while in Dubuque despite the fact that he is a convicted felon.

Maurer will be on supervised release for three years when he is released from prison.
