WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. State Department says it wants to release some of the emails from former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton by next January.

The State Department made the proposal in a federal court filing last night, saying it plans to post the releasable portions of 55,000 pages on its website.

A department official says the review will take until the end of the year.

Clinton, who's now running for president and is meeting with small business leaders in Cedar Falls Tuesday, has said she wants the State Department to release the emails as soon as possible.

That meeting in Cedar Falls in not open to the public.

The disclosure that the Democratic presidential candidate had conducted State Department business on a private email account has been a source of controversy.
