Deputies: Former hotel worker attempts to kill boss

Posted: Updated:
WILLIAMSBURG (KWWL) -

An Ainsworth man charged in attempting to kill an Iowa City man at a hotel, is a former employee at the hotel.

48-year old Ron Lee Boughner is charged with attempted murder after deputies say he shot at his former boss Yule Park, the  Ramada Inn hotel manager and owner.

Lt. Tim Walters with the Iowa County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened inside the hotel just off Interstate 80 about 5 miles east of Williamsburg.

Deputies say Boughner shot at Park with a 9 millimeter semi-automatic handgun.

They say Boughner fired a shot toward Park at close range, only about 10 to 15 feet away. Boughner missed and tried to fire again - his gun jammed and Park escaped.

Witnesses tell us Boughner had recently quit and went to pick up his last check, but Iowa County deputies will not confirm that.

Meanwhile this scare won't change anything for AJ Baack, he's been living in the Williamsburg area for a while.

"We really haven't had shootings around here or anything, it's just kind of weird to think about," said Baack. "it it's not going to change my way of living around here, it just gives you something to think about."

Deputies would not confirm how long Boughner was employee at the hotel, but they did arrest him within minutes of the shooting.

Lt. Walters says there were witnesses to the attempted murder and they're being interviewed as the investigation is still ongoing.

Park was not hurt.

During Boughner's initial appearance in court, the judge set his bond at $25,000.

He's in the Iowa County Jail.

We searched Iowa Cold Cases and found out the hotel - under a different name at the time,  is the same one two people were murdered in 1980.

Rose Burkert, 22, and Roger Atkison, 32, from Missouri were killed with an ax-like weapon, according to Iowa Cold Cases.

The 1980 case is yet to be solved.
