OELWEIN (KWWL) -

A family of three was able to escape a house fire Sunday night.

The Oelwein Fire Chief says it happened at 11:30 p.m. in the 500 block of 2nd Avenue NW.

The fire started in the garage but moved to the house, causing some structural and smoke damage.

Officials say the garage is a total loss, but the home can be saved.

Firefighters were able to get inside the home and rescue the family's dog, but they did lose a cat.

It's still unclear what started the fire, but crews say it doesn't look intentional.
