Neighbor reacts to Waterloo sibling shooting

WATERLOO (KWWL) - A 14-year-old boy is facing charges for killing his sister.

Waterloo police say Diyrun Coffer shot his 15-year-old sister, Jykeria, with a stolen handgun.

It happened inside their home in the 900 block of Broadway street around six last night.

Coffer faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter along with a weapons and burglary charge.

The burglary and weapons charges stem from an incident that happened earlier that day.

Neighbors say the girl's death is a tragic example of what can happen when guns fall into the wrong hands.

"It wasn't like it was violence, it was a situation where a child got a hold of something they weren't supposed to get a hold of," said neighbor Jennifer Hess.

Emotions ran high the night Jykeria was killed.

"I came out and unfortunately witnessed the grandmother get the news her granddaughter passed, and she collapsed to the ground." said Hess.

Hess says she is acquaintances with the family, and she can't imagine how the shooter, Jykeria's 14-year-old brother must feel.

"A 14 year old doesn't really fully comprehend what guns can do. I heard he was crying hysterically because he shot his sister. They think they understand it but they don't," said Hess.

KWWL learned the 17-year-old arrested in connection with a shooting incident on Reed Street Wednesday is the brother of the Coffer siblings.

Shaquan Coffer was arrested Thursday for possession of weapons as a felon.
