WATERLOO (KWWL) -

In years to come, fruit grown at the Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens' new orchard will go the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

This weekend gardeners will plant 106 fruit trees, and in three to five years, the orchard will provide the food bank with apples, pairs, plums and cherries.

The project was part of the arboretum's ten-year plan, but plant-enthusiasts were recruited from the Black Hawk County Extension Office's Master Gardner program.

Master Gardener Bonnie Wetzel is co-chairing the project and says the trees are paid for through grants.

While this will be an ongoing project in years to come, gardeners will be planting the trees Saturday at 9 a.m.

Volunteers are welcome to assist in planting the trees.
