WATERLOO (KWWL) -  The Cedar Valley Sportsplex has been open more than a year, but financial pledges are finally in place to cover the $27 million dollar project.

The facility is so big, it's almost impossible to capture it's vastness on camera.

But at one in the afternoon on a Thursday, there's not much going on.

But don't be fooled memberships are exceeding expectations.

"We've got 2000 members which actually equates to about four or five thousand people. So we're well ahead of what we anticipated or what we needed to break even, we're making money," says Waterloo Development Corporation President Dan Watters.

It wasn't always this way.

The facility opened in January of 2014, but there weren't enough members to turn a profit until the following Fall.

Austin McGuire has been going to the SportsPlex since it opened.

He enjoys the facility's diversity.

"I was working out at a gym in Cedar Falls prior to this and for me, what I like to do, this has a lot more options" he says.

As far as the facility itself, there's money in the bank for the unexpected.

"I think it's very sustainable and we're putting money aside as we go along so it doesn't become a burden for the taxpayer," says Watters.

"The taxpayers are really giving nothing to support the SportsPlex right now, although the city did use tax dollars to acquire the property, that was planned before the facility was," says Waterloo's Chief Financial Officer Michelle Weidner.

Now that funding is secured, the WDC is looking into a new project -- a competitive swimming facility adjacent to the SportsPlex.
