NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -

The community of North Liberty is taking on a special census to more accurately measure the size of the city.

The city says its population quickly outpaces the official count by the federal government done once a decade.

In 2010, North Liberty's official population was 13,374.  Now, city officials estimate the population at more than 17,000.

A special census will cost the city about $310,000 -- but the city estimates it will make up that cost by an increased amount of state taxes that are distributed based on population.

For example, cities use the state road use tax to build and maintain roads.

North Liberty expects it could see an additional $280,000 per year based on an updated head count.
