WATERLOO (KWWL) - A jury convicted Perquondis Holmes of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Daequan Campbell in 2013 in Waterloo -- but instead of an automatic life sentence, a judge granted him a new attorney.

Holmes says he didn't get a fair trial after a photo showing gang signs was entered by the prosecution in court. An earlier ruling stated gang information was forbidden in court.

"Today he should have been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison," said Chantelle Bentley, Campbell's cousin. "It really, really made me upset that he can turn around and speak to his mother and his kids and family -- and me and my family, we have to go to Daequan's grave to talk to him."

Holmes shot and killed Campbell behind a Waterloo apartment building in 2013. Campbell later died at the hospital.

It seems like yesterday for Campbell's family, still mourning the man they affectionately call "Bubba."

"You don't even know what my family has been through, and a lot of people in the community, you know, they always point fingers," Bentley said. "Some people don't even know how to grieve. I don't even know if I've grieved for Bubba yet."

A hearing for Holmes' new attorney and the possibility of a new trial will be held at the end of July.
