DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Budget cuts mean Grandview Avenue will be missing many of the flowers that make it one of Dubuque's most iconic streets.

Nearly 45 flower beds sit empty, and will remain that way.

But one group is working to change that.

Gwen Kosel and Joan Frommelt are spearheading an effort to raise $27,000 and plant flowers in those beds.

"It's just not the same street," Frommelt said.

Both women have lived along Grandview Avenue for many years.

"South Grandview is one of the first drives I took as a Dubuque resident about 20 years ago," Kosel said. "I think that people really identify that this is one of our premiere streets, and they enjoy seeing the flowers."

The group took their project proposal to the Dubuque City Council, and will meet with Dubuque's Leisure Services Manager Tuesday.

Kevin Lynch, a city council member, said he's excited to see people step up and take charge of this project.

One of the issues the group faces is maintenance of the flower beds. The money they are trying to raise would cover everything up to the planting of the flowers.

"One of the issues we have with the city is maintaining the flowers," Kosel said. "We're trying to get permission for citizens to come out and weed and water these flowers."

Kosel said she's working on finding sponsors for the flower beds, and raise the other money through a GoFundMe account, which can be found here: http://www.gofundme.com/tr9h3b7k.
