WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Bette Wubbena is a mother and a grandmother.

For the last 25 years, she's worked at the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber.

Fourteen years ago, a heart attack put her in a coma for 10 days and almost killed her.

Doctors were preparing to take her off life support when she opened her eyes.

"Of course everyone was shocked because my family planned my funeral the night before, knowing that I would pass the next day," Wubbena said.

It only took Wubbena a month to recover until she was back at work.

With the support of the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber and her family, she continues to volunteer in the community.

Following her heart attack she got involved with the American Heart Association.

Wubbena has been helping with the association by spreading awareness and fundraising.

"I don't want my daughter or granddaughter or anyone else's loved one to go through what I did, so I hope that my efforts are helping there."

She's thankful to be spending yet another Mother's Day with her family this year, and to be able to make a difference at the same time.

" I have to say that volunteering is probably the most rewarding experience besides being a wife and a mother and a grandmother," Wubbena said.

Wubbena also volunteers with the Waterloo Downtown Rotary, Waterloo Schools Foundation, the YWCA and many other organizations and events in Eastern Iowa.
