DUBUQUE (KWWL) - The Dubuque Regional Humane Society is now requiring people make an appointment before turning in animals.

The Humane Society says it's an effort to increase the number of adoptions and decrease the number of pets being put down. Employees will have the opportunity to gather medical and behavioral information on animals before they're turned in -- and hope to be able to give out information that may help families keep their pets at home.

This comes after criticism of the Humane Society. You may remember back in February a volunteer was fired for her comments about a cat being put down.

Appointments are required starting June 1, 2015. Call 563-582-6766 to schedule an appointment.
