Mock texting and driving accident leaves an impact on students

FAIRBANK (KWWL) -

3 teenagers are dead and one is behind bars. The crime? Texting and Driving.

Even though the scene is fake, the impact is real.

Wapsie Valley High School student, Dylan Lampe says, "A lot of people text and drive. They don't think it'll happen to them but the reality is that it can happen to anyone. It just brings it home for a lot of people out there."

Every few years, many high schools and real-life first responders stage a themed accident with plenty of fake blood and shattered glass.

Brian Stark from Fairbank Fire and Rescue says, "A lot of these kids, until it happens to them- the lights, the sirens, the noise of the equipment...seeing someone they know like their classmate, friend, brother, or sister involved with something like this...I think it hits home."

So, when it comes to texting and driving, is it really worth it?

Lampe says, "No I don't think it's worth the risk personally. I've seen what it can cause- but I have caught myself being tempted before."

And when those temptations come and they will, crews say hopefully these images from the accident come to mind.
