IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Iowa City is considering eliminating jail time for misdemeanors and establishing a penalty for indecent exposure.

This comes after a recent Iowa Supreme Court ruling.

The penalty for many misdemeanors is a set fine, however, some offenses don't have a penalty. In those cases, the court can order imprisonment of up to 30 days.

In 20 years, the City Attorney's office says only one case was a defendant sentenced to jail time -- and that was for indecent exposure.

So for those cases, the city is considering including the possibility of jail in addition to a fine.

Dubuque recently voted to eliminate jail time for simple misdemeanors.
