IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Work on the First Avenue Grade Separation Project is set to begin Tuesday, meaning traffic will be delayed.

Peterson Contractors of Reinbeck, Iowa will be starting work on the project that involves lowering First Avenue, raising the Iowa Interstate (IAIS) Railroad tracks, and constructing a railroad bridge over First Avenue.

On Tuesday, May 5, First Avenue will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Bradford Drive to Mall Drive.

The project will be constructed in phases over the next two construction seasons and will require multiple lane reductions and detours throughout construction.

Drivers are asked to give themselves extra time and use caution when traveling in the First Avenue area.
