Waterloo denies liquor license due to application inconsistencies

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

For the 2nd time in 2 months, the Waterloo City Council has denied a liquor license to a Waterloo nightclub.

It concerns Club Empire - located on W. 5th St.

City officials say the problem isn't where it's located, or a history of trouble at that location with previous owners, but that the liquor license application has some inconsistencies.

They say names are different on the liquor license application compared to sales tax documents.

"You want to make sure the individuals that have these liquor licenses are able to abide by the laws and the rules that are set forth, so they don't want individuals who are committing crimes or have felonies or felonies in the last 5 years to hold a liquor license," said Waterloo city clerk Suzy Schares.

The city also officially passed a ban on roadside memorials at its Monday night meeting on a 5-2 vote.
