GOP 2016 field grows by 2: Fiorina and Carson announce

Posted: Updated:

It was a big event for retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson as he announced his candidacy for president, while former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina announced her candidacy with an online video.

KWWL's political analyst and UNI political professor Chris Larimer isn't surprised to see the news of Carson and Fiorina entering the race, but he doesn't see them going very far.

"I think people like the idea of an outsider coming in, but at the end of the day they still want someone who's held elected office. So I think they'll be able to say certain things that maybe the other candidates won't be able to say because they're not in elected office," said Larimer.

Larimer says they represent groups the Republican Party has had trouble with, like women and black voters, but he doesn't see where they fit in with their policy views.

Still, Iowans will do their research.

"There's a pretty good chance they're going to talk to these people face-to-face and one-on-one and so they do their research because they know they're going to be able to ask them serious questions," said Larimer.
