CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The University of Northern Iowa will hold its seventh annual Panther Pick Up, a project to help the environment while benefiting the community, on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8.

At a time when many UNI students are moving out of residence halls and apartments, Panther Pick Up gives old stuff new life. Instead of throwing unwanted household items in the dumpster to end up in the landfill, usable items can be donated to charitable organizations, which will have pick-up sites at convenient locations on campus. Donated materials will go directly back to the local community.

During Panther Pick Up, St. Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army trucks will accept clothing, dishes, furniture, carpet and other usable household items. Agency staff determines whether or not they can accept certain items. Metal items not accepted can be recycled on UNI's campus on the north side of the UNI Physical Plant in the red metal recycling container.

Panther Pick Up locations and times are listed below and on the UNI Office of Sustainability website at www.uni.edu/pantherpickup, along with additional details about the event.

The times for donation are noon to 4 p.m., May 7, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 8. Locations include:

-East side of Redeker Center

-23rd Street near Commons Circle

-East Towers

-Northwest corner of Campbell Hall

Students living off campus may donate items by calling St. Vincent de Paul at 319-232-3366 to schedule pick up of usable furniture, computers, keyboards, printers, computer accessories and other large items.

Last year's Panther Pick Up collected 10 full truckloads of furniture, clothing and household necessities. The program also received 13 full bed sets, which were all delivered to families in need. For more information on UNI's Panther Pick Up, contact Eric O'Brien, university sustainability coordinator, at 319-273-7207 or eric.obrien@uni.edu.
