DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Biniv Maskay is an economics professor at Loras College, and a native of Nepal.

"I got the news around 3:30 a.m. in the morning and I found out this event happened a couple of hours ago," Maskay said. "So obviously my first reaction was to ensure my family is OK, so I tried to call them. So I was really concerned, and obviously feeling very helpless at the same time. Very desperate at the moment."

He said they are OK, and most of his friends are too. But there is still a lot of concern about his home country.

"It's been really tough. Last few days all I've done is sit in front of the computer, check for any updates. You know, I try to step away from it a bit and then I just can't do it anymore, so I just rush back to the computer again and see if there are any updates," he said.

Monday, Maskay talked to a group of Loras students and staff about what is going on in his home country and what they can do to help.

Loras has a particularly strong connection to Nepal -- they've had more than 60 Nepalese students graduate.

He, along with some fellow Nepalese alumni, set up a fundraising campaign called Duhawks for Nepal.

You can donate to that page here: https://www.crowdrise.com/duhawksfornepal.  All of the money donated to that campaign will go straight to the American Red Cross.

Internet fundraising accounts cannot be independently verified and vetted by KWWL; please research the recipient of the funds before donating.
