DES MOINES (KWWL) -

An Iowa soldier is reunited with his family after a big surprise at the Iowa Capitol.

His teenage daughter was part of a ceremony there but she had no idea her dad would be there, too.

The Frey family is from Parkersburg.

Samantha Frey was at a ceremony at the capitol proclaiming it Military Child Month.

She had no idea her soldier dad was back after nine months in Iraq.

Those in attendance could see it coming.

Samantha Frey was there to perform a literary piece about being a soldier's child.

Major General Tim Orr presented her with a coin during the ceremony.

Then, Frey's father, SSG James Frey, appeared next to her.

When she turned around and saw him, the two hugged.

James Frey was expected to be home in 9 days but he had other ideas - with both Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds there to see it.

Samantha Frey says it was something she says she's dreamed about.

"I think every military kid kinda has that in the back of their head. I tortured myself by watching a lot of home videos and the show 'Coming Home'. I definitely tortured myself," said Frey.

This was Frey's second deployment with the guard.

He's also completed several deployments with the Marine Corps.

Samantha's mom and the Iowa National Guard worked together to bring SSG Frey home early for Friday's event.
