Graffiti raises concern for neighbors

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Neighbors are concerned and confused as signs of graffiti have been popping up in a Waterloo neighborhood.

Multiple spots of graffiti can be found at the intersection of W. Mullan and Wellington. A symbol of "X3" was found on Aaron Mathenia's home; he was driving home from work when he noticed it.

"There was a concern, what does this mean? Why is it on my house?"

Mathenia says his kids found other graffiti while playing outside, including markings on the sidewalk, trees and in the middle of the street.

He says it's a concern for him and his family because he doesn't understand why these signs are in his neighborhood.

"We live in a kind of unstable community right now. I don't want to be included in that, I don't want my children included in that - who would?"

Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka says the graffiti raises red flags.

"Your typical juvenile vandalism is "I Love Susie," or a swear word. But these, a letter and a number, it tells me something."

Chief Trelka took pictures of the graffiti and plans to send them to his Violent Crime Apprehension Team for further investigation. He says it's too early to tell if there's a legitimate connection to gang activity.
