DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Cold and damp weather couldn't stop the Western Dubuque Environmental Club from volunteering during Dubuque's Days of Caring Friday.

They were busing raking leaves and planting flowers--helping beautify the YMCA in Dubuque.  For them, it's all about giving back.

"Because it's a great opportunity to give back to the community," said Alyssa Dougherty, a junior at Western Dubuque.  "And I'm having lots of fun with my friends."

It's part of a greater outreach across Dubuque.  1,300 volunteers are expected to help at 47 non-profits across the city.  Lisa Bowers, chair of the event, said it's a win-win for the community and the non-profits."

"The non-profits just love it, because really they need the extra hands. Usually they're running on a lean team, and they're wearing many different hats. And so they don't always have a maintenance crew or they don't always have the extra hands or the extra supplies," she said.

She added, "I think most people want to give back to their community, they want the opportunity to help clean up areas and to give a helping hand to someone that needs it. So this is a great opportunity for them to do these one time service projects."

Poor weather caused some events to be cancelled, but organizers said that at least a dozen projects will still happen on Saturday.
