CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Mount Mercy University's drama department will be performing “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” for their annual spring drama production on April 24-25 at 7:30 p.m. and April 26 at 2:30 p.m.

This six-time Tony Award nominee musical follows a dysfunctional, yet humorous group of middle school adolescents on their journey to win the Putnam Valley Middle School Spelling Bee. The audience will participate along the way as the group finds themselves encountering self-doubt, anxiety, loneliness, sexual awakening and the realization that winning isn't everything.

“'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' is a hilarious and often touching look at the pressures and fears of middle schoolers in today's competitive and often self-selective world,” said Jason Alberty, drama coordinator. “The MMU production is peopled by a giving and talented cast. The music is fun and silly. The audience participation should just take it over the top.”

Tickets are available at the Student Services suite located on the second floor of the Sisters of Mercy University Center or can be ordered online at www.mtmercy.edu/tickets. Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and non-Mount Mercy students, and free for Mount Mercy students. The production is not recommended for young children.
